In the last 24 hours there have been at least 3 significant Flares on the sun. As you can see from this image there are several significant sun spots in the view of Earth at this time. This particular event is attributed to sunspot 1882 on the left of the image.

The Live Solar video page shows several of the flares which were captured and are rather impressive to watch.
